Finding Peace in God’s Presence: Taking Time for Yourself When Anxiety Feels Overwhelming

Finding Peace in God’s Presence: Taking Time for Yourself When Anxiety Feels Overwhelming

Have you ever felt as though your mind simply won’t slow down? Perhaps you have a long list of responsibilities, worries about the future, or thoughts that keep circling no matter how hard you try to set them aside. Sometimes, even when everything around us seems quiet, our hearts and minds can feel anything but peaceful.

As Christian women, we often spend so much time caring for our families, managing our homes, helping others, and keeping up with daily responsibilities that we forget to make time for ourselves. Yet we need moments of rest, too. Taking time to step away from the busyness of life and spend a few quiet moments with God can help us slow down, reflect on His Word, and respond to our anxious thoughts with biblical truth.

You don’t have to wait until life becomes less demanding to begin making room for these peaceful moments. You can start right where you are, even if you only have five minutes.

Why We Need Quiet Moments With God

Anxiety can make it difficult to concentrate, relax, or enjoy the present moment. Our minds may become occupied with what could happen tomorrow, what went wrong yesterday, or everything we feel we need to accomplish today.

When this happens, it can be helpful to pause rather than continue rushing through the day. A quiet moment with God gives us an opportunity to step back from our responsibilities, acknowledge what is troubling us, and direct our attention toward the truth of His Word.

Philippians 4:6–7 offers this encouragement:

“Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.

And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.” — Philippians 4:6–7, KJV

Paul reminds believers to bring their requests to God in prayer, with thanksgiving. Instead of allowing our worries to occupy every moment, we can turn our attention to prayer and remember the blessings we have already received.

This does not mean that anxiety will disappear the moment we pray, or that experiencing anxiety means we lack faith. Anxiety can have many causes, and sometimes additional support is needed. However, making space for prayer and biblical reflection can become a meaningful part of how we care for ourselves and respond to difficult thoughts.

Give Yourself Permission to Slow Down

Sometimes we feel guilty about taking time for ourselves. We may think there is always something more important to do, another task waiting to be completed, or someone else who needs our attention.

But constantly pushing ourselves without taking time to rest can leave us feeling emotionally exhausted.

You do not have to earn a few quiet moments by finishing everything on your to-do list. It is okay to sit down, make yourself a cup of tea, open your Bible, and spend some time reflecting on God's Word.

Your time with God does not have to be lengthy or complicated. You might begin with five minutes in the morning, a short break in the afternoon, or a peaceful moment before bed.

Choose a comfortable place where you can sit without rushing. Put aside distractions when possible, take a few comfortable, unhurried breaths, and allow yourself to settle into the moment.

You are not trying to force yourself to feel peaceful. You are simply making room to pause, think, pray, and reflect.

Four Simple Ways to Spend a Peaceful Moment With God

You don't need an elaborate routine to make your quiet time meaningful. Here are four simple practices you can begin using today.

1. Pause and Acknowledge What You Are Feeling

Before opening your Bible, take a moment to recognize what is happening in your heart and mind.

Are you worried about something specific? Do you feel overwhelmed by responsibilities? Are you carrying concerns that you haven't had time to process?

You don't need to judge yourself for feeling anxious. Simply acknowledge what is troubling you and give yourself permission to write it down or bring it to God in prayer.

Putting your thoughts into words can sometimes help you understand what is weighing on you instead of trying to hold everything in your mind at once.

2. Read a Passage From Scripture

God's Word gives us truth to consider when our thoughts feel unsettled. Choose a short passage and read it slowly, paying attention to what it teaches.

Here are three passages to consider:

- Philippians 4:6–7 — Bring your requests to God in prayer and thanksgiving.

- Philippians 4:8 — Consider the things that are true, honest, just, pure, lovely, and of good report.

- 2 Timothy 1:7 — Remember that God has not given us the spirit of fear, but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.

You don't have to study a large portion of Scripture every time you sit down. Even a few verses can give you something meaningful to think about throughout the day.

Ask yourself what the passage teaches, what truth you need to remember, and how you might apply that truth to your circumstances.

3. Bring Your Concerns to God in Prayer

Prayer gives you an opportunity to express your concerns honestly. You can tell God what is troubling you, ask for wisdom, and thank Him for His goodness.

Your prayer doesn't have to sound polished. You don't need to find perfect words or hide your feelings. Simply express your thoughts and requests.

You might pray about a difficult conversation, a financial concern, a family responsibility, or an uncertain situation. You can also pray for help with the practical decisions you need to make.

After praying, consider whether there is one small, helpful step you can take today. Some concerns may require action, while others involve circumstances you cannot resolve immediately. Learning to distinguish between the two can help you approach your responsibilities more thoughtfully.

4. End With One Truth to Remember

Before returning to your day, write down one truth from the passage you read.

Perhaps you want to remember that you can bring your requests to God, that you can direct your thoughts toward what is true, or that you can ask for wisdom when you don't know what to do.

Keep that truth somewhere you can revisit it later.

When anxious thoughts return, you can pause and remind yourself of what you have been learning from God's Word. You may need to repeat this practice many times throughout the day, and that is perfectly okay.

How Writing Can Help You Process Anxious Thoughts

Sometimes our thoughts feel more overwhelming when they remain unspoken and unorganized in our minds. Journaling gives us a place to slow down and consider them one at a time.

You might write about what is worrying you, what Scripture says about your situation, what you can do today, and what you want to bring to God in prayer.

Writing can also help you notice patterns in your thoughts and recognize when you are worrying about things that have not happened or trying to manage circumstances outside your control.

You don't need to be an experienced journaler to benefit from this practice. A few honest sentences are enough to begin.

The goal isn't to create a perfect journal entry. It is to give yourself space to reflect, process your concerns, and focus on biblical truth.

Give Yourself Grace as You Learn to Slow Down

Learning to make time for yourself and God may take practice, especially if you are accustomed to putting everyone else's needs before your own.

Some days your quiet time may feel peaceful and focused. Other days, your mind may wander, your worries may return, or you may struggle to concentrate. Don't turn your quiet time into another task you feel you must perform perfectly.

Instead, begin again gently. Read a few verses, write down a thought, or offer a simple prayer. Small, consistent moments can help you develop a meaningful habit of turning to God's Word throughout your daily life.

And remember that seeking professional support is appropriate when anxiety becomes persistent, interferes with daily life, or feels difficult to manage. Prayer, Scripture, practical coping strategies, and professional care can work together.

You don't have to solve every problem today. You can take the next step, make room for a moment of reflection, and give yourself grace along the way.

May your quiet moments become a welcome opportunity to step back from the demands of the day, remember the truth of God's Word, and approach your responsibilities with renewed perspective.

Take a few minutes today. Open your Bible, bring your concerns to God, and give yourself permission to pause.
