Romans Chapters 1-3 (KJV): Our Need for the Gospel

Romans Chapters 1-3 (KJV): The Universal Need for the Gospel

The opening chapters of Romans lay the foundation for one of the Apostle Paul's greatest doctrinal epistles. From a Mid-Acts grace perspective (learn more about rightly divided Bible study - click here), Romans is written directly to the Body of Christ and reveals God's righteousness through the gospel committed to Paul. Before presenting salvation by grace through faith, Paul first establishes a critical truth: all mankind is guilty before God and in need of a Savior.

Romans Chapter 1: The Gentile World Under Condemnation

Paul begins by introducing himself as the apostle separated unto the gospel of God. He immediately declares the power of the gospel and the righteousness of God revealed through faith.

Key Verse

"For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth..." (Romans 1:16, KJV)

Paul explains that God's wrath is revealed against ungodliness because mankind has rejected the knowledge of God. Although God's creation testifies of His eternal power and Godhead, humanity chose idolatry over worshiping the Creator.

As a result, God "gave them up" to the consequences of their sinful choices. The Gentile world descended into moral corruption, spiritual darkness, and every form of unrighteousness.

Paul demonstrates that the Gentile nations stand condemned before a holy God. No amount of human wisdom, religion, or morality can remove this guilt. This prepares the reader to understand why salvation must come entirely through God's grace.

Another Key Verse

"Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful..." (Romans 1:21, KJV)

Romans Chapter 2: The Religious Man Is Also Guilty

After exposing the sins of the Gentiles, Paul turns his attention to the moral and religious person. The Jew may have possessed the Law, but possessing truth is not the same as obeying it.

Paul teaches that God's judgment is righteous and impartial. Merely hearing the Law does not justify anyone; only perfect obedience would do so, and no one can achieve that standard.

Key Verse

"For there is no respect of persons with God." (Romans 2:11, KJV)

The Jews trusted in their religious identity, circumcision, and possession of the Law. However, Paul shows that outward religion cannot produce true righteousness.

The chapter dismantles confidence in religion, heritage, and self-righteousness. Whether Gentile or Jew, all stand accountable before God. The Law reveals sin but cannot justify the sinner.

Another Key Verse

"For not the hearers of the law are just before God, but the doers of the law shall be justified." (Romans 2:13, KJV)

Romans Chapter 3: Every Mouth Stopped Before God

Romans 3 brings Paul's argument to its conclusion. Both Jews and Gentiles are under sin. No group possesses inherent righteousness before God.

Paul strings together Old Testament passages proving the universal sinfulness of mankind.

Key Verses

"As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one:" (Romans 3:10, KJV)

"For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;" (Romans 3:23, KJV)

The Law was never given as a means of justification. Instead, it reveals sin and leaves the whole world guilty before God.

Then comes one of the greatest transitions in Scripture:

"But now the righteousness of God without the law is manifested..." (Romans 3:21, KJV)

Here Paul begins unveiling the glorious truth of justification by faith. Sinners are declared righteous through faith in Jesus Christ apart from the works of the Law.

Key Verse

"Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus:" (Romans 3:24, KJV)

This chapter introduces the heart of Paul's gospel. Justification is not earned through law-keeping, religious performance, or human effort. It is a free gift of God's grace received through faith in Christ alone. This truth is foundational to understanding God's present Dispensation of Grace.

Main Lessons from Romans 1-3

1. The Gentiles Are Guilty Before God

The nations rejected the light God gave them and became corrupted through sin.

2. The Religious Person Is Guilty Before God

Possessing religious knowledge or outward rituals cannot produce righteousness.

3. The Jews Are Guilty Before God

Having the Law does not remove guilt when the Law is broken.

4. The Whole World Is Guilty Before God

Every human being falls short of God's perfect standard.

5. Justification Comes by Grace Through Faith

God offers righteousness as a free gift through faith in the Lord Jesus Christ.

Foundational Verse

"Therefore we conclude that a man is justified by faith without the deeds of the law." (Romans 3:28, KJV)

Conclusion

Romans chapters 1-3 reveal mankind's desperate condition and God's perfect solution. Paul carefully proves that neither the Gentiles, the moral person, nor the Jew can stand righteous before God on their own merits. Every mouth is stopped, and all the world becomes guilty before Him.

Yet the same chapters introduce the wonderful message of grace: God justifies sinners freely through faith in Jesus Christ. This is the foundation upon which the rest of Romans is built and a cornerstone truth for believers living under God's present Dispensation of Grace.
