5 Tips for Scrolling Less and Living More with Purpose

Plus One Bonus Tip to Help You Draw Closer to Christ

Have you ever picked up your phone to check one message and found yourself still scrolling an hour later?
Most of us have been there.
Smartphones have become part of everyday life. They help us stay connected with family, find information, read the Bible, and even listen to Christian podcasts. But when our phones begin controlling our attention instead of serving us as tools, they can quietly steal our time, peace, and focus.

As Christian women, we're called to use our time wisely and set our affection on things above (Colossians 3:2). That doesn't mean we can never enjoy technology. It means learning to use it intentionally instead of allowing it to consume our lives.

Here are five practical tips that can help you spend less time scrolling and more time living with purpose.

1. Set Healthy Boundaries with Your Phone
If you don't decide when you'll use your phone, your phone will often decide for you.
Simple boundaries can make a tremendous difference.
Try setting times during the day when you intentionally put your phone away. You might choose not to check social media until after your morning Bible reading or avoid looking at your phone during meals.
Boundaries create space for what matters most.
Remember, every "yes" to endless scrolling is often a "no" to something more valuable.

2. Use a Timer
One of the easiest ways to reduce screen time is by setting a timer.
Tell yourself you'll spend ten or fifteen minutes checking social media. When the timer goes off, put your phone down.
Many smartphones also include Screen Time or Digital Wellbeing features that allow you to track your usage and set daily limits for certain apps.
Sometimes we simply aren't aware of how much time we've spent until we see the numbers.

3. Fill Your Time with Better Things
Breaking a habit is easier when you replace it with something meaningful.
Instead of reaching for your phone every free moment, try:
• Reading your Bible
• Spending time in prayer
• Reading a Christian book
• Going for a walk
• Working on a hobby
• Writing in a journal
• Calling a friend
• Completing a household task
• Listening to worship music or biblical teaching
Replacing endless scrolling with life-giving activities helps create healthier habits over time.

4. Be Present
It's easy to miss the blessings God has placed right in front of us when our attention is constantly focused on a screen.
Whether you're talking with family, spending time with friends, enjoying nature, or sitting quietly with a cup of coffee, choose to be fully present.

The memories we make offline are often far richer than anything we scroll through online.

5. Keep Christ First
Technology should never become more important than our relationship with the Lord.
Begin each day by spending time in God's Word before opening social media whenever possible.

Prayer, Bible study, and quiet time help refocus our hearts on what truly matters.

As Colossians 3:2 reminds us:
"Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth."

The more our hearts are fixed on Christ, the easier it becomes to recognize when technology is becoming a distraction.

Bonus Tip: Don't Aim for Perfection—Aim for Progress

Many people feel discouraged after a bad day of endless scrolling.
Don't give up.

Changing habits takes time.
If you spent too much time on your phone yesterday, today is a new opportunity to make better choices.

Celebrate small victories.
Maybe you spent five fewer minutes scrolling today.
Maybe you read one chapter of your Bible before checking your notifications.
Those small decisions add up over time.

God's grace is greater than our failures, and He can help us grow one step at a time.

Remember Why You're Making These Changes
Reducing screen time isn't just about using your phone less.
It's about creating more room for what matters most:
• More peace.
• More purpose.
• More meaningful relationships.
• More time with God.
• More intentional living.
Technology should be a helpful tool—not something that quietly controls our attention.
