7 Simple Ways to Start Christian Journaling
7 Simple Ways to Start Christian Journaling
Even If You Don't Know What to Write
Have you ever wanted to start a Christian journal but stared at a blank page and thought, “I don't know what to write!”?
You're not alone.
Christian journaling doesn't have to be complicated, and you don't need to be a professional writer or have beautiful handwriting. Your journal can simply become a quiet place where you slow down, reflect on God's Word, pray, give thanks, and record what you are learning in your walk with the Lord.
The goal isn't to create a perfect journal.
The goal is to create a meaningful space for reflection.
Here are seven simple ways you can begin Christian journaling today.
1. Start With a Scripture
One of the easiest ways to begin is to choose a Bible verse that speaks to you.
Write the Scripture at the top of your page and then spend a few minutes thinking about it.
You might write:
• What does this verse say?
• What words stand out to me?
• What does this Scripture teach me?
• Why is this verse meaningful to me?
• Is there something I need to remember?
You don't have to write a page and a half.
Even a few sentences can become a meaningful journal entry.
Try This:
Choose one verse from your Bible and write it in your journal today. Then write one thing that stands out to you about that verse.
2. Keep a Prayer Journal
Your journal can also become a place to record your prayers.
You might write about something that is weighing on your heart, someone you want to pray for, or something you are thankful for.
You can simply begin with:
“Lord, today I am bringing ______ before You.”
Then write honestly.
Your prayer journal doesn't need to sound formal or polished. You can write your thoughts, concerns, thanksgiving, and requests.
You can also look back at previous entries and remember the ways God has answered prayers or faithfully carried you through difficult seasons.
3. Write Down What You're Thankful For
Gratitude journaling is another simple way to begin.
At the end of the day, write down three to five things you are thankful for.
They don't have to be huge blessings.
You might be thankful for:
• A peaceful morning
• A conversation with someone you love
• A beautiful day
• A favorite Bible passage
• God's patience and grace
• Something you were able to accomplish
• A small encouragement you received
Scripture reminds us to give thanks unto the Lord because He is good.
Taking time to recognize those blessings can help you become more intentional about noticing God's goodness in everyday life.
4. Write About What You're Learning From the Bible
Your Christian journal can become an extension of your Bible study.
When you're reading Scripture, write down what you're learning.
You could create sections such as:
Scripture:
What passage am I studying?
What Stands Out to Me:
What caught my attention?
What I Learned:
What did I learn from this passage?
My Reflection:
What thoughts did this Scripture bring to mind?
This can be especially helpful when you're studying a particular book of the Bible or working through a devotional.
Instead of simply reading and moving on, you're giving yourself time to slow down and reflect.
5. Record Encouraging Truths
There will be days when you need to remind yourself of what is true.
Use your journal to record encouraging biblical truths that you want to remember.
For example, you might create a page titled:
Truths I Need to Remember
Then write down Scriptures and biblical truths that encourage you.
You could include reminders about:
• God's grace
• Your identity in Christ
• God's faithfulness
• God's love
• Salvation
• Your position in Christ
• The hope you have through God's Word
When you're having a difficult day, you can return to these pages.
Your journal can become a collection of reminders of God's truth.
6. Create a "God Is Faithful" Page
Here's a journaling idea that can become especially meaningful over time.
Create a page titled:
God Is Faithful
Whenever you see God work in your life, write it down.
Maybe you received an unexpected encouragement.
Maybe a difficult situation worked out differently than you expected.
Maybe you simply recognized God's goodness in something ordinary.
Write it down.
Over time, you'll have a collection of memories that remind you of God's faithfulness.
You can return to these pages when you need encouragement.
7. Keep It Simple
Perhaps the most important Christian journaling tip is this:
Don't make journaling harder than it needs to be.
You don't need an elaborate journaling system.
You don't need expensive supplies.
You don't need to write every single day.
And you certainly don't need to create Pinterest-perfect journal pages.
You can begin with a notebook, a Bible, and a pen.
Even five or ten minutes can give you an opportunity to slow down and reflect.
Your journaling practice might look different from someone else's—and that's okay.
There is no one perfect way to journal.
What If I Don't Know What to Write?
If you sit down with your journal and your mind goes completely blank, try answering one of these questions:
📖 Scripture
• What Scripture am I thinking about today?
• What word or phrase stood out to me?
🙏 Prayer
• What is on my heart today?
• Who can I pray for?
💜 Grace
• What am I thankful for about God's grace?
• What truth about my identity in Christ do I need to remember?
🌷 Reflection
• What have I been learning lately?
• What is something I want to remember from this season of my life?
✨ Gratitude
• What are three things I'm thankful for today?
• What blessing might I have overlooked?
You don't have to answer all of them.
Just choose one.
Make Christian Journaling a Joy—Not a Chore
Christian journaling should not become another item on your spiritual checklist.
It can simply be a peaceful practice that helps you slow down and intentionally reflect on God's Word.
Some days you may write several pages.
Other days, you may write only a few sentences.
And some days, you may not journal at all.
That's okay.
The purpose isn't perfection.
It's reflection, encouragement, gratitude, and making space to think about the things of God.
So grab your favorite notebook, open your Bible, pick a Scripture, and start with one page.
You may be surprised at how meaningful those simple pages become over time.
