Complete in Christ: A Bible Study to Help Grace Believers Recognize and Avoid Sonship Edification
Complete in Christ: A Bible Study to Help Grace Believers Recognize and Avoid Sonship Edification
Have you ever encountered a Bible teaching that sounded convincing at first but left you questioning what you understood about your identity in Christ? Have you wondered how to distinguish sound grace doctrine from teachings that may subtly change your understanding of salvation, spiritual growth, prayer, or your position in the Body of Christ?
As grace believers, we must be willing to examine what we are taught, compare it with Scripture, and recognize the importance of rightly dividing the Word of truth.
That is why I'm pleased to introduce my new 89-page eBook, Complete in Christ: Untangling Sonship Edification — A KJV Bible Study & Journal for Grace Believers.
This resource was created to help believers examine Sonship Edification, understand the doctrinal differences discussed in the book, recognize teachings that deserve careful scrutiny, and become more established in the truth of their completeness in Christ.
What Is Sonship Edification?
Sonship Edification, often abbreviated as SE, is a system of Bible teaching associated with particular interpretations of Paul's epistles and the Christian life. It places considerable emphasis on spiritual growth, sonship, and a believer's future role in God's heavenly government.
However, some of its distinctive teachings raise important doctrinal questions about whether believers receive their complete position in Christ at salvation or must progress toward a higher status through spiritual development.
Other teachings associated with this system concern prayer, God's knowledge, and the relationship between spiritual maturity and future responsibilities.
These are not minor questions. They affect how believers understand God's Word, their standing in Christ, and their relationship with the Lord.
My purpose in writing Complete in Christ is to examine these issues in light of Scripture from a Mid-Acts dispensational grace perspective, with an emphasis on the King James Bible and the importance of rightly dividing the Word of truth.
Rather than accepting a teaching simply because it uses biblical terminology or quotes Paul's epistles, we should carefully examine what is being taught and whether the conclusions agree with Scripture in context.
Why Is This Teaching Worth Examining Carefully?
One of the most important truths for grace believers to understand is that our completeness is found in Jesus Christ.
Colossians 2:10 declares:
“And ye are complete in him, which is the head of all principality and power.” — Colossians 2:10, KJV
Notice that the verse says we are complete in Him. It does not tell us that we must achieve a higher level of spiritual maturity before we can become complete in Christ.
Spiritual growth certainly matters. We should study God's Word, grow in understanding, renew our minds with truth, and become established in sound doctrine. But growing in our knowledge of what God has given us is different from trying to attain a more complete position before Him.
When a teaching causes believers to question whether they have received everything God has provided for them in Christ, it deserves careful examination.
Our focus should remain on what God has revealed through His Word, including the riches of His grace and the believer's present position in the Body of Christ.
What Will You Learn Inside This 89-Page eBook?
Complete in Christ: Untangling Sonship Edification provides an organized resource for examining these doctrinal questions through Bible study, explanation, and personal reflection.
Here is a closer look at the subjects addressed in the eBook.
1. Understanding Sonship Edification and Its Distinctive Teachings
The book introduces the teaching system and examines key areas where its distinctive interpretations raise questions for grace believers.
Rather than relying on labels alone, the goal is to help you recognize the actual claims being made, understand why they matter, and compare them with the Scriptures discussed in the study.
2. Spiritual Growth Versus Attaining a Higher Sonship Status
One area of concern is the relationship between spiritual maturity and a believer's standing before God.
The study examines the distinction between growing in the knowledge of God's Word and the idea that believers must progress toward a higher sonship status or heavenly position.
A believer can mature in understanding, become more established in sound doctrine, and learn to walk according to the truth without needing to earn a more complete standing in Christ.
3. The Body of Christ, Heavenly Positions, and Future Responsibilities
The eBook addresses teachings concerning future positions of authority in God's heavenly government and the relationship between spiritual maturity and those responsibilities.
It is important to distinguish between what Scripture reveals about the Body of Christ's future and claims that believers must attain different levels of sonship or heavenly status.
Our future hope should be understood through Scripture, not through speculation or a system that makes our present completeness in Christ seem insufficient.
4. Examining Teachings About Prayer
Prayer is another subject that deserves careful biblical consideration.
The study addresses restrictive concepts of prayer associated with Sonship Edification, including the idea that prayer should be limited to spiritual matters rather than ordinary earthly needs.
Grace believers should examine what Paul's epistles teach about prayer and consider whether a particular restriction is actually established by Scripture.
We should not automatically accept a doctrine simply because it is presented as a more advanced or spiritually mature understanding.
5. Examining Claims About God's Knowledge
The book also addresses the concerning claim associated with this teaching system that God is not omniscient today.
Because our understanding of God's character must be grounded in Scripture, claims about His knowledge deserve especially careful examination. We should ask whether the passages being used actually support the conclusion being drawn.
A doctrine should never be accepted merely because someone presents it confidently or uses a complicated explanation to make it sound convincing.
6. Bible-Based Explanations and KJV Scripture Study
Throughout the eBook, the emphasis is on examining doctrine through Scripture and understanding the passages in their proper context.
The King James Bible is used as the basis for the study, with attention to the importance of rightly dividing the Word of truth and understanding the distinctive message committed to the Apostle Paul for this present dispensation of grace.
The goal is not simply to tell you what to believe, but to encourage you to examine the Scriptures and become better equipped to evaluate what you hear.
7. A Three-Day Bible Study and Printable Journaling Pages
At the end of the eBook, you'll find a three-day Bible study designed to help you reflect on the material and apply what you've learned to your own study of God's Word.
The printable journaling pages provide space to record Scripture references, write down observations, organize your thoughts, and reflect on the truths you are studying.
You can read the eBook on your computer, tablet, or other compatible device, and print the pages you want to use for your personal Bible study.
Warning Signs to Look For When Evaluating Sonship Edification Teachings
Learning to recognize doctrinal warning signs can help you become more discerning when listening to Bible teachers, reading articles, or studying unfamiliar teachings.
Here are several areas to examine carefully.
1. Claims that believers must attain a higher level of sonship.
Pay attention when a teaching suggests that spiritual maturity determines whether you have attained a higher sonship status or a more elevated standing in God's purposes. Ask whether the distinction being made is clearly established in Scripture.
2. Claims that spiritual development determines future heavenly rank or governmental authority.
Distinguish what Scripture actually says about the future of the Body of Christ from claims that believers must progress through spiritual levels to qualify for particular heavenly positions.
3. Restrictive teachings about prayer.
Be cautious when a system establishes rigid limitations on prayer that are not clearly supported by the passages being discussed. Examine Paul's teaching on prayer rather than assuming that a restriction represents a more advanced understanding.
4. Claims that God is not omniscient today.
Any claim that changes your understanding of God's knowledge should be examined particularly carefully. Read the relevant passages in context and determine whether the proposed conclusion genuinely follows from Scripture.
5. Complicated explanations that make your position in Christ seem uncertain.
If a teaching repeatedly causes you to question whether you are truly complete in Christ, ask whether the confusion comes from Scripture itself or from the interpretive system being imposed upon it.
6. Treating a particular teacher's interpretations as the standard for spiritual advancement.
No teacher should replace Scripture as your authority. Compare interpretations with the biblical text, examine the reasoning behind them, and be willing to reject conclusions that do not hold up under careful study.
These warning signs are reasons to investigate a teaching, not substitutes for examining its actual claims and supporting passages. The goal is careful discernment, not fear or suspicion toward everyone who disagrees with us.
How Can You Protect Yourself From Unsound Doctrine?
You do not have to become an expert on every theological system to practice discernment. There are several practical steps you can take.
Study Scripture in context. Read the surrounding verses and the larger passage instead of relying on an isolated verse or someone else's explanation.
Practice rightly dividing the Word of truth. Pay attention to the audience, context, and message of the passages you study, recognizing the distinctive revelation given to Paul concerning the Body of Christ and the dispensation of grace.
Compare teachings with the actual biblical text. When a teacher makes a claim, ask where the Scriptures teach that conclusion. Distinguish between what the text explicitly states and what someone infers from it.
Be cautious of claims of advanced or exclusive understanding. A teaching does not become true simply because it is presented as a deeper revelation that ordinary believers have failed to understand.
Give yourself permission to pause. If a teaching leaves you confused, you do not have to accept it immediately. Take time to study the passages, write down your questions, and seek sound biblical instruction.
Keep your confidence in Christ. Remember that spiritual growth is important, but your salvation and completeness rest in Jesus Christ, not in your ability to master every theological debate.
Second Timothy 2:15 provides an important reminder:
“Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.”
We should approach Bible study with humility, care, and a willingness to let Scripture correct our understanding.
Remember: You Are Complete in Christ
One of the most encouraging truths in God's Word is that our acceptance before God rests in Jesus Christ.
Ephesians 1:6 speaks of God's grace:
“...wherein he hath made us accepted in the beloved.”
Our standing in Christ is not something we earn by becoming spiritually impressive, attaining a special level of understanding, or meeting the expectations of a particular theological system.
We can grow in knowledge, develop discernment, and become more established in sound doctrine because we belong to Christ. We do not need to live in fear that we have failed to reach some higher spiritual status before God can fully accept us.
My hope is that this study will encourage you to examine unfamiliar teachings carefully, become more confident in what Scripture says, and rest in the sufficiency of Christ and His finished work.
