Building Doctrine in the Inner Man

How Paul's Epistles Build Doctrine in the Inner Man

Paul prayed:

"That he would grant you... to be strengthened with might by his Spirit in the inner man;" (Ephesians 3:16 KJB)

The inner man is strengthened as believers learn, believe, and apply the sound doctrine found in Paul's epistles (Romans–Philemon). Each book builds upon the previous one, much like laying the foundation of a house before adding the walls and roof.

Romans – The Foundation of Grace

Romans lays the doctrinal foundation for the Christian life.

Here we learn:

  • Man's sinful condition.
  • Justification by faith alone.
  • Eternal security in Christ.
  • Identification with Christ in His death, burial, and resurrection.
  • Freedom from the Law.
  • Walking after the Spirit.
  • God's dispensational dealings with Israel and the Body of Christ.
  • Practical Christian living.

Without Romans, the believer has no solid doctrinal foundation.

Key Verse:

"Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ." (Romans 5:1 KJB)

1 Corinthians – Correcting Carnality

After learning grace, believers must learn to leave spiritual immaturity.

Paul corrects:

  • Divisions
  • Pride
  • Worldliness
  • Immorality
  • Abuse of Christian liberty
  • Misuse of spiritual gifts
  • False teaching
  • Error concerning the resurrection

The believer begins learning to think spiritually instead of carnally.

Key Verse:

"Quit you like men, be strong." (1 Corinthians 16:13 KJB)

2 Corinthians – Ministry Through Grace

Now Paul teaches believers how grace works during suffering.

The believer learns:

  • Comfort in affliction
  • Forgiveness
  • Giving
  • Spiritual warfare
  • Faithfulness in ministry
  • Depending upon Christ's strength instead of our own

Paul's own life becomes the example.

Key Verse:

"My grace is sufficient for thee." (2 Corinthians 12:9 KJB)

Galatians – Defending Grace

After establishing believers, Paul warns them against legalism.

The believer learns:

  • Salvation is not maintained by works.
  • We are not under the Mosaic Law.
  • Liberty is not license.
  • Walking in the Spirit produces godly fruit.

Galatians protects the foundation laid in Romans.

Key Verse:

"Stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free." (Galatians 5:1 KJB)

Ephesians – Our Heavenly Identity

Now Paul reveals the believer's position in Christ.

We learn:

  • The Mystery
  • The Body of Christ
  • Heavenly places
  • Spiritual blessings
  • Unity
  • The new man
  • Spiritual warfare
  • The armor of God

The believer begins seeing life from Heaven's perspective.

Key Verse:

"Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who hath blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ." (Ephesians 1:3 KJB)

Philippians – The Mind of Christ

Doctrine now begins to really shape our thinking.

Paul teaches:

  • Joy regardless of circumstances
  • Humility
  • Contentment
  • Spiritual maturity
  • Christ-centered living

The believer learns to think like Christ.

Key Verse:

"Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus." (Philippians 2:5 KJB)

Colossians – Christ Is All

Paul now protects believers from false philosophy and religious traditions.

The believer learns:

  • Christ's complete sufficiency
  • Freedom from religious ordinances
  • Victory over legalism
  • Walking in Christ
  • Setting affection on things above

The inner man becomes firmly centered upon Christ alone.

Key Verse:

"As ye have therefore received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk ye in him." (Colossians 2:6 KJB)

1 Thessalonians – Living in Hope

The believer learns to live every day expecting Christ's return.

Paul teaches:

  • Holy living
  • Encouragement
  • Love
  • Faithfulness
  • The catching away of the Body of Christ

Hope becomes a motivation for godly living.

Key Verse:

"Comfort one another with these words." (1 Thessalonians 4:18 KJB)

2 Thessalonians – Stability During Confusion

Paul corrects prophetic confusion.

The believer learns:

  • To avoid deception.
  • To stand fast in sound doctrine.
  • To remain faithful while waiting for Christ.

Doctrine produces stability instead of fear.

Key Verse:

"Stand fast, and hold the traditions which ye have been taught." (2 Thessalonians 2:15 KJB)

1 Timothy – Order in the Local Church

Now Paul teaches leadership and church order.

Believers learn:

  • Sound doctrine
  • Godly leadership
  • Prayer
  • Godliness
  • Caring for others
  • Defending truth

The inner man grows through serving faithfully.

Key Verse:

"Take heed unto thyself, and unto the doctrine." (1 Timothy 4:16 KJB)

2 Timothy – Endurance & Faithfulness to the Doctrine

Paul's final letter teaches believers how to remain faithful during apostasy.

The believer learns:

  • Rightly dividing Scripture
  • Endurance
  • Faithfulness
  • Preaching the Word
  • Avoiding false doctrine

This book strengthens believers for difficult times.

Key Verse:

"Study to shew thyself approved unto God... rightly dividing the word of truth." (2 Timothy 2:15 KJB)

Titus – Grace Produces Godliness

Paul teaches that God's grace changes how we live.

Believers learn:

  • Good works follow salvation.
  • Sound doctrine produces godly conduct.
  • Grace teaches holy living.

Our outward life begins reflecting the doctrine within.

Key Verse:

"For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men, Teaching us..." (Titus 2:11–12 KJB)

Philemon – Grace in Action

The final epistle demonstrates mature grace in everyday relationships.

Paul illustrates:

  • Forgiveness
  • Reconciliation
  • Love
  • Humility
  • Receiving others as Christ received us

Philemon shows what a fully established believer looks like when grace governs the heart.

Key Verse: "Receive him as myself." (Philemon 1:17 KJB)

The Progression of Spiritual Growth

When read together, Paul's epistles progressively strengthen the inner man:

1. Romans — Lay the foundation.

2. 1 Corinthians — Correct carnality.

3. 2 Corinthians — Learn grace through suffering.

4. Galatians — Defend liberty from legalism.

5. Ephesians — Understand your heavenly identity.

6. Philippians — Develop the mind of Christ.

7. Colossians — Become rooted in Christ's sufficiency.

8. 1 Thessalonians — Live in hope.

9. 2 Thessalonians — Stand firm against deception.

10. 1 Timothy — Practice sound doctrine in the church.

11. 2 Timothy — Endure faithfully and rightly divide the Word.

12. Titus — Display godliness through grace.

13. Philemon — Demonstrate mature grace in personal relationships.

As believers grow through the doctrine revealed in Paul's epistles, they are "strengthened with might by his Spirit in the inner man" (Ephesians 3:16 KJB), becoming rooted in grace, established in the faith, and equipped to serve Christ as faithful ambassadors during this present Dispensation of Grace.
