The God of all Comfort
2 Cor 1:3-5 KJB
3 Blessed be God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies, and the God of all comfort;
4 Who comforteth us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort them which are in any trouble, by the comfort wherewith we ourselves are comforted of God.
5 For as the sufferings of Christ abound in us, so our consolation also aboundeth by Christ.
As believers who believe God's word rightly divided and choose (more often than not) to live godly, we suffer. We suffer when we share the gospel with others and some of them choose to reject it. We want them saved but they refuse to believe and so our hearts ache for them. We suffer when we share sound doctrine with other believers who have not yet come unto the knowledge of the truth, (understanding God's word rightly divided and them at least being established in foundational grace doctrines) but some of them reject it and continue to live in legalistic teachings and religious deceptions. We want to see them mature in the word and have inner joy, but some of them simply refuse to learn. We suffer as Christian women today that dress and behave modestly, are keepers at home and obey our husbands, and we hear some people laugh at or mock us. We suffer reproach from unbelievers or carnally-minded believers when we don't cave into ungodly agendas in society today but stick with what God's word teaches us about marriage, family and other important issues. We also have the sufferings of illness, anxiety, fear, death, grief, loss, bad decisions we've made, etc that sometimes come and go in all of our lives.
But God comforts us. First, we know that God works all things together for our good (Romans 8) and our sufferings will lead to rewards in heaven. But he also comforts us in the here and now through His word. As we read and study scripture rightly divided we are reminded of our identity in Christ, our eternal security, the many wonderful spiritual blessings that we have in Christ Jesus and the many wonderful things to come. We look forward to Christ coming to gather up his church, the Body of Christ, unto himself and take us one day to our new heavenly home. We look forward to the glorious new bodies that we will have, being reunited with our saved loved ones in heaven, meeting more saints and the holy angels in heaven, no longer having the burden of the sin nature in our flesh, no longer living in a sin cursed world and many other things. We learn and remind ourselves of this through His word. This is how God comforts us.
He also "sends" fellow believers to bring us comfort in our time of need. The sound grace doctrine working in their (and our) inner man will result in believers encouraging and helping one another. This is how we too can comfort others, by allowing Christ and His word to live in and through us.
If you need comfort today, spend some time in prayer and in reading the only book that can truly bring you comfort, and that is the Holy Bible.
