Zealous of Good Works | A devotional
💛 A People Set Apart for Good Works
Paul writes with striking clarity about God’s intention for the Body of Christ:
“Who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify unto himself a peculiar people, zealous of good works.”
— Titus 2:14 (KJB)
Being zealous means being eager, passionate, and intentional. But Paul never presents good works as a means of salvation. Instead, they are the natural outflow of a life transformed by grace.
We are saved unto good works, not by them:
“For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works…”
— Ephesians 2:10 (KJB)
Grace doesn’t make us passive. It energizes us. It produces a life that reflects Christ Himself.
💜 What Are These Good Works?
Paul gives us a clear picture of the kinds of good works that flow from grace:
📖 1. Sharing the Gospel of Grace
The gospel entrusted to Paul is central to our mission:
“And the gospel which was preached of me is not after man… but by the revelation of Jesus Christ.”
— Galatians 1:11–12 (KJB)
Sharing the message of Christ’s death, burial, and resurrection for our justification is one of the highest good works we can engage in.
📚 2. Teaching Sound Grace Doctrine
Paul urges believers to hold fast to the pattern of sound words:
“Hold fast the form of sound words, which thou hast heard of me…”
— 2 Timothy 1:13 (KJB)
Good works include building others up in the distinct message given to Paul for the Body of Christ.
🩵 3. Encouraging and Edifying Others
Grace produces a community that strengthens one another:
“Wherefore comfort yourselves together, and edify one another…”
— 1 Thessalonians 5:11 (KJB)
Encouragement is not optional—it is a grace-driven ministry.
❤️ 4. Showing Love, Kindness, and Forgiveness
Paul roots our behavior in Christ’s example:
“And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ’s sake hath forgiven you.”
— Ephesians 4:32 (KJB)
Love is the atmosphere in which all good works grow.
🕊️ 5. Living Peaceably and Graciously
Grace teaches us how to walk in this present world:
“Teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly…”
— Titus 2:12 (KJB)
Our conduct becomes a testimony of the gospel we proclaim.
💛✝️🩷 The Source of All Good Works: Christ in Us
Here’s the heart of it:
We cannot produce these works in our own strength.
Paul says:
“I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me…”
— Galatians 2:20 (KJB)
And again:
“For it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure.”
— Philippians 2:13 (KJB)
Good works are not the product of human effort but the fruit of Christ’s life expressed through us.
Grace doesn’t just save us—it empowers us.
When we rest in our identity in Christ, the Spirit uses the doctrine we believe to produce a life that reflects Him.
📝 Journaling Prompts🩷💜🩵
1. Where do I see Christ producing good works in my life, and where am I still relying on my own strength instead of His?
2. How can I intentionally position myself this week to share the gospel, encourage someone, or walk in kindness and forgiveness?
🙏 Prayer🩷💜🩵💛
Lord, thank You for redeeming me and creating me anew in Christ Jesus. Teach me to rest in Your grace and allow Christ to live His life through me. Make me zealous of good works—not in my own strength, but by Your power working in me. Let my life reflect Your love, truth, and kindness as I share the gospel and walk in sound doctrine. Amen.
