The Spiritual Source of Smartphone Addiction

When it comes to understanding the spiritual nature of our smartphone addiction, we need to first of all understand that Satan is the “god of this world” today. He is also known as the “prince of the power of the air” (think not just heavenly places but also airwaves, wifi etc!). Satan is a master deceiver. Though the internet, social media and our smartphones can be used in productive ways to help spread the gospel, it can definitely also be used in unproductive and even harmful ways.

“In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them.” - 2 Cor 4:4

“Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience:’ - Eph 2:2

Satan will use several things to try to wreck our spiritual lives including:

Constant Distraction

At its core, smartphone addiction often stems from a desire to escape reality. The constant notifications, social media updates, and endless streams of information provide a distraction from life’s challenges and uncertainties. For Christians, this distraction can be particularly concerning as it diverts attention away from spiritual growth and communion with God.

The Bible cautions about the perils of distraction. The narrative of Mary and Martha in Luke 10:38-42 emphasizes the significance of concentrating on what is essential. Martha busied herself with preparations, while Mary opted to sit at Jesus' feet and absorb His teachings. Jesus praised Mary for selecting "what is better," underscoring the importance of prioritizing spiritual enrichment above earthly diversions.

Luke 10: 41-42

“And Jesus answered and said unto her, Martha, Martha, thou art careful and troubled about many things: But one thing is needful: and Mary hath chosen that good part, which shall not be taken away from her.”

The Fallacy of Control

Smartphone addiction may also stem from the illusion of control. Having the ability to access information, communicate instantly, and manage various aspects of life using a device can create a misleading sense of self-reliance. This heavy reliance on technology can result in reduced dependence on a higher power.

Proverbs 3:5-6 advises believers to "Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.”

Understanding that genuine control and guidance originate from God and not from our gadgets is crucial in combating smartphone addiction.

The Quest for Approval

Social media platforms, easily accessed via smartphones, often ignite a craving for validation and recognition from others. The quest for likes, comments, and followers can transform into a fixation, replacing the pursuit of living unto God with a reliance on human validation.

In Galatians 1:10, Christians are prompted to reflect on their intentions: "For do I now persuade men, or God? or do I seek to please men? for if I yet pleased men, I should not be the servant of Christ.” Redirecting the quest for validation towards God rather than social media can help break free from this cycle of dependency.
