Bible Study on 1 Corinthians Chapter 8 for Christian Women

 

"Now as touching things offered unto idols, we know that we all have knowledge. Knowledge puffeth up, but charity edifieth." 1 Cor 8:1 KJB

Core Theme:

 Knowledge must bow to charity. Liberty must be governed by love.

Paul addresses a practical issue in Corinth — eating meat offered to idols — but the deeper lesson is about how believers use their liberty in Christ. Mid‑Acts believers understand that we are not under the law, but under grace (Romans 6:14). Yet grace never gives us permission to harm another believer’s conscience.

1. “Knowledge puffeth up, but charity edifieth.” (v.1)

Paul acknowledges that some believers had the knowledge that idols were nothing. They were correct doctrinally. But knowledge alone can inflate the ego. Charity, however, builds up others.

Mid‑Acts insight:

 Right division gives us clarity and knowledge — but that knowledge must always be used in love. Grace doctrine should make us gentle, not arrogant.

2. “To us there is but one God… and one Lord Jesus Christ.” (v.6)

Paul affirms monotheism and the unique role of Christ. Idols have no real power. Meat offered to them is not spiritually contaminated.

Mid‑Acts insight:

 Paul’s gospel centers on Christ alone (1 Cor. 15:1–4). Our liberty flows from our identity in Him, not from religious rules.

3. “Howbeit there is not in every man that knowledge.” (v.7)

Not every believer is at the same level of understanding. Some still feel defiled by eating such meat because of their past associations with idolatry.

Mid‑Acts insight:

 Grace teaches us to be patient with weaker brethren. Spiritual growth is a process.

4. “Take heed… lest this liberty of yours become a stumblingblock.” (v.9)

Paul warns that using liberty without love can wound another believer’s conscience.

Mid‑Acts insight:

 We are free in Christ — but we are also responsible. Liberty is never an excuse to disregard the spiritual well‑being of others.

5. “When ye sin so against the brethren… ye sin against Christ.” (v.12)

Hurting a weaker believer is not a small matter. Christ identifies with His Body.

Mid‑Acts insight:

 This is not about losing salvation or falling from grace. It is about walking worthy of our calling and honoring Christ by honoring His Body.

6. Paul’s Conclusion (v.13)

If eating meat causes a brother to stumble, Paul will abstain entirely.

Mid‑Acts insight:

 This is the heart of grace living — not demanding our rights, but choosing love.

Summary Takeaway

Grace gives liberty, but love governs liberty.

 Knowledge is good, but charity is greater. The mature believer chooses what edifies, not merely what is permissible.

Father, thank You for the liberty I have in Christ through Your grace. Teach me to walk in love toward others, not using my freedom carelessly but with a heart that desires to edify. Help me to grow in knowledge without pride, and in charity without fear. Let my choices reflect the gentleness and patience of Christ. Strengthen me to build up the Body and to honor You in all things. In Christ’s name, Amen.
