1 Corinthians 9 Bible Study for Christian Women

1 Corinthians 9 Bible Study for Christian Women

**Please also read and refer to 1st Corinthians chapter 9 in your own King James Bible**

Theme: Paul’s apostleship, his right to be supported, and his choice to surrender his rights for the sake of the gospel of grace.

Paul Defends His Apostleship (vv. 1–6)

Paul begins with strong questions: “Am I not an apostle? Am I not free?”

He reminds the Corinthians that they themselves are the seal of his apostleship — the proof that Christ sent him.

This matters because Paul is the apostle of the Gentiles (Romans 11:13), entrusted with the dispensation of grace. His authority was often challenged, and Corinth struggled with respecting his role.

Paul also notes that he and Barnabas had the right to “forbear working,” meaning they had the right to be financially supported in ministry.

The Right to Receive Support (vv. 7–14)

"If we have sown unto you spiritual things, is it a great thing if we shall reap your carnal things?" 1 Cor 9:11

Paul uses everyday examples:

• A soldier doesn’t serve at his own expense

• A farmer eats from his own vineyard

• A shepherd drinks the milk of the flock

He quotes the law: “Thou shalt not muzzle the mouth of the ox that treadeth out the corn.”(vs9)

In other words, those who minister spiritual things have the right to receive material support.

But here’s the grace‑filled twist:

Paul chooses not to use this right so that nothing would hinder the gospel of Christ.

This is a beautiful Mid‑Acts principle:

Grace gives us liberty, but love leads us to lay down liberty for the sake of others.

Paul’s Voluntary Servanthood (vv. 15–18)

Paul says he would rather die than have anyone think he preached for money.

He explains that preaching the gospel is not optional — “necessity is laid upon me.”

His reward is not payment.

His reward is preaching the gospel freely, without charge.

This reflects the heart of grace:

 Freely received, freely given.

Becoming “All Things to All Men” (vv. 19–23)

"To the weak became I as weak, that I might gain the weak: I am made all things to all men, that I might by all means save some. And this I do for the gospel's sake, that I might be partaker thereof with you." 1Cor 9:22-23

This is one of the most quoted sections:

• To the Jews, he became as a Jew

• To those under the law, as under the law

• To those without law, as without law

• To the weak, he became as weak

Why?

“That I might by all means save some.”

This is not compromise.

This is adaptability for the sake of the gospel, without ever altering the message of grace.

Paul never changed the gospel — he changed his approach, not the doctrine.

Running to Win (vv. 24–27)

Paul ends with athletic imagery:

• Run to obtain

• Be temperate in all things

• Keep the body under control

This is not about salvation — salvation is by grace alone.

This is about reward, discipline, and faithfulness in the ministry entrusted to us.

Paul doesn’t want to be “a castaway” — not rejected by God, but disqualified from reward.

This aligns with the Judgment Seat of Christ (2 Corinthians 5:10), where believers are rewarded for faithful service, not judged for sin.

Key KJV Verse Highlights

• “Am I not an apostle? Am I not free?” (v. 1)

• “The Lord ordained that they which preach the gospel should live of the gospel.” (v. 14)

• “I am made all things to all men, that I might by all means save some.” (v. 22)

• “So run, that ye may obtain.” (v. 24)

1‑Day Bible Study Plan: 1 Corinthians 9 KJB

1. Read 1st Corinthians Chapter 9 KJB

Read the entire chapter slowly.

Note every time Paul mentions a “right” he chooses not to use.

2. Reflect

Ask:

• What rights do I cling to?

• Where might love call me to lay something down?

3. Connect to Sound Grace Doctrine

Identify how Paul’s apostleship and message differ from the kingdom program.

Reflect on how grace motivates service.

4. Apply

Choose one area today where you can “become all things to all men” — adapting your approach to show Christ’s love.

Journaling Prompts

1. Where is God inviting me to surrender a personal right so that His grace can shine more clearly through me?

2. How can I adapt my approach to people without compromising the truth of the gospel of grace?

Prayer

Father, thank You for the example of Paul, who lived out the gospel of grace with humility and love. Teach me to walk in the same spirit — willing to lay down my rights, willing to serve, and willing to adapt for the sake of reaching others. Strengthen me to run my race with purpose, discipline, and joy. Let Your grace be seen in everything I do. Amen.
