Devotional: Set Your Affection Above—Even When Life Below Hurts

Devotional: Set Your Affection Above—Even When Life Below Hurts

“Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth.” — Colossians 3:2 (KJV)

Paul’s instruction is not escapism. It is not denial. It is not pretending life is painless.

Paul wrote these words while suffering physically, emotionally, financially, and relationally. He knew what it meant to be overwhelmed. And yet he said:

“As sorrowful, yet alway rejoicing…” — 2 Corinthians 6:10 (KJV)

This is not a command to “fake joy.”

It is an invitation to anchor your heart in a reality deeper than your circumstances.

Why “Things Above” Are Not an Escape

From a Mid‑Acts perspective, our identity, hope, and blessings are heavenly, not earthly. God never promised us Israel’s earthly prosperity, healing, or deliverance. But He did promise us:

• all spiritual blessings in heavenly places (Eph. 1:3)

• eternal security (Rom. 8:38–39)

• the indwelling Spirit who helps our infirmities (Rom. 8:26)

• the hope of glory (Col. 1:27)

Focusing on things above doesn’t remove the storm.

It keeps the storm from removing you.

When “Just Be Joyful!” Isn’t Helpful

People sometimes throw out quick spiritual phrases because they don’t know what to say. But Paul never minimized suffering. He said:

“We were pressed out of measure, above strength…” — 2 Corinthians 1:8 (KJV)

If Paul felt overwhelmed, you’re not unspiritual for feeling the same.

Joy in the Lord is not a switch you flip. It’s a Person you lean on.

Encouragement + Practical Application for Difficult Seasons

Below are three major areas believers struggle with—and how to “set your affection above” while still dealing with real life below.

When You’re Facing Financial Strain

Truth from Above:

Your worth is not measured by your bank account.

Your identity is not tied to your income.

Your security is in Christ, not in cash.

“My God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus.” — Philippians 4:19 (KJV)

Practical Application:

• Prioritize stewardship over panic.

Make a simple budget. Track spending. Cut what you can. This is not lack of faith—it’s wisdom.

• Ask for help without shame.

Paul received financial support from churches. You are not “less spiritual” for needing assistance.

• Focus on what you can control.

Apply for aid, seek counsel, explore new income opportunities. Action is not unbelief.

• Remember your eternal riches.

Meditate on Ephesians 1. You are spiritually wealthy even when financially stretched.

When Relationships Are Strained or Breaking

Truth from Above:

You are accepted in the beloved (Eph. 1:6).

Your identity is not defined by who leaves or who stays.

“If it be possible, as much as lieth in you, live peaceably with all men.” — Romans 12:18 (KJV)

Practical Application:

• Do what lies within your responsibility—not beyond it.

You can control your words, your tone, your humility. You cannot control someone else’s heart.

• Set healthy boundaries.

Grace does not mean enabling harmful behavior.

• Seek reconciliation where possible.

Not forced. Not rushed. Not demanded. But offered.

• Lean into the Body of Christ.

Paul constantly relied on fellow believers for comfort and encouragement.

• Remember your heavenly acceptance.

When earthly relationships shake, your relationship with Christ remains unbreakable.

When You’re Battling Health Issues

Truth from Above:

God does not promise physical healing in this dispensation, but He does promise sustaining grace.

“My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness.” — 2 Corinthians 12:9 (KJV)

Practical Application:

• Seek medical care without guilt.

Paul told Timothy to take medicine (1 Tim. 5:23). Using doctors is not a lack of faith.

• Allow yourself to rest.

You are not failing spiritually because your body is weak.

• Invite others to support you.

Paul often needed companions to help him physically.

• Focus on your future glorified body.

Your suffering is temporary. Your resurrection body is eternal (Phil. 3:20–21).

• Let weakness drive you to dependence.

Not despair—but deeper reliance on Christ’s strength.

What It Means to “Set Your Affection Above” in Real Life

 ● It means you acknowledge the pain but refuse to let it define you.

● It means you face your circumstances but anchor your heart in Christ.

● It means you walk through the valley but keep your eyes on the Shepherd.

Prayer

Father God, You know the weight each heart carries today. You see the financial strain, the broken relationships, the sickness, the fear, the exhaustion. Thank You that You do not ask us to pretend these burdens don’t exist. Instead, You invite us to lift our eyes to things above— to Christ, our life, our hope, our strength. Help us to rest in who we are in Him. Help us to walk wisely in our circumstances. Help us to trust Your grace when we feel weak, and to remember that nothing can separate us from Your love. Strengthen every weary believer reading this. Fill them with Your peace, Your comfort, and Your sustaining grace. In Christ’s name, Amen.

Journaling Prompts

1. Which earthly burden is weighing on me the most right now, and what heavenly truth speaks directly to it?

2. What practical step can I take this week—financially, relationally, or physically—while still keeping my affection set on things above?
