Titus 2 Woman Part Six Bible Study

Titus 2 Woman Part Six Bible Study

Titus 2:3-5 says,

3The aged women likewise, that they be in behaviour as becometh holiness, not false accusers, not given to much wine, teachers of good things;

4That they may teach the young women to be sober, to love their husbands, to love their children,

5To be discreet, chaste, keepers at home, good, obedient to their own husbands, that the word of God be not blasphemed.

The older women are to teach the younger women to be good. In the Bible, Jesus Christ said during his earthly ministry that only God is good (Mat 19:17). However, as believers, we have God's Spirit living in our spirit, so we have God's goodness inside of us. Unbelievers do not. As we get sound grace doctrine built up in our inner man, we can then also walk in the Spirit, allowing Christ to live in and through us. So, God's goodness can shine out from us to others. Our flesh is not good, because even as believers, in our flesh dwelleth no good thing. But we can allow Christ to live in and through us. This is how we can be good and do good. We can do good things for others - primarily, teaching Gods word and sharing the Gospel. However, it can of course include practical daily things in life that you do such as make your husband his favorite meals; bake special treats for your children; call a loved one or visit them on their birthday; send note cards to family and friends in the mail; volunteer to help cook at the next church conference; speak words of encouragement to fellow believers; visit the elderly and the sick; and other such things. These are good things to do. We give all glory to God for every good thing that He does through us.

The older women are also to teach the younger women to be obedient to their own husbands. This means listening to and obeying his requests, as long as they are not sinful. If he's a godly man, he will have grace about his requests. A husband might ask his wife, for example, to keep a monetary budget. You can do this and be cheerful about it, even though your flesh might not always like it! Just remind yourself that in heaven we will live in glorious abundance, so it's okay if we have to keep a budget for now while we are here on earth. Older women teach the younger women to obey their husbands by example and by teaching them Gods word regarding our roles as men and women.

So, to summarize all of the things that the older women are to teach the younger women, the reason for teaching these things is "so that the word of God be not blasphemed". What does this mean?

As believers, we need to keep the gospel in mind at all times. We need to consider other people's greatest need which is salvation and then spiritual maturity as a believer. If we are believers, we need to live like believers should be living, which is to live godly and walk by grace through faith. The primary reasons are so that we are not grieving the Holy spirit and so that those around us can see Christ living in and through us. If an unbeliever sees a Christian woman living worldly like dressing immodestly, always fighting with her husband, gossiping about others, not keeping a clean house, letting her children run wild, being overly materialistic, flirting with men who are not her husband, being loud and obnoxious etc it can ruin her testimony and that unbeliever is less likely now to believe the gospel. If a woman is a new Christian and sees another Christian woman who's been saved awhile but living very worldly, they might also assume that it's just okay for a Christian woman to live worldly and so they will have been negatively influenced and have loss of rewards at the judgment seat of Christ. So, we must keep others in mind!

We also need to consider of course our own family. They need us to take care of them and our children and even our grandchildren will learn about God and godly living from us. So, we don't want to blaspheme God's word, or make Christianity look bad by any kind of worldly, carnal behavior.
