Romans 2: 5-11 | Women's Bible Study


Father God, thank you for this time that we can spend reading and studying your Holy Word. Thank you for teaching us in this section about your righteous judgment. In Jesus's name, amen.


Today we are continuing to discuss verses 5-11.

5 But after thy hardness and impenitent heart treasurest up unto thyself wrath against the day of wrath and revelation of the righteous judgment of God;
6 Who will render to every man according to his deeds:
7 To them who by patient continuance in well doing seek for glory and honour and immortality, eternal life:
8 But unto them that are contentious, and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness, indignation and wrath,
9 Tribulation and anguish, upon every soul of man that doeth evil, of the Jew first, and also of the Gentile;
10 But glory, honour, and peace, to every man that worketh good, to the Jew first, and also to the Gentile:
11 For there is no respect of persons with God.


Again, in verse 5 we learned that God's judgment will have various degrees of punishment. "But after thy hardness and impenitent heart treasurest up unto thyself wrath against the day of wrath and revelation of the righteous judgment of God;"

It also tells us that God's judgment is righteous. But what is the day of wrath? 2 Thess 1:9 says, "Who shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord, and from the glory of his power;" and Revelation 6:17 says, For the great day of his wrath is come; and who shall be able to stand?” Today, in the dispensation of grace, God’s wrath is being held back by His love, grace, and mercy. But, when the dispensation of grace is over, God will pour out His wrath on an unbelieving world.

Verse 6 goes on to say, "Who will render to every man according to his deeds:" Again, as discussed previously, all people will be judged by the same standard.

Verse 7 says, "To them who by patient continuance in well doing seek for glory and honour and immortality, eternal life:" If you CONTINUOUSLY do good, and NEVER sin in thought, word or deed, then you will earn glory, honour and eternal life. However, the ONLY person to ever live on this earth and never sin was the Lord Jesus Christ! This is because he is God, but was also a man. He took on a physical body, but didn't have the sin nature. Even though he didn't inherit the sin nature like all of the rest of humanity (because he is God's Son and was born of a virgin), he was still tempted in every way like we are. Hebrews 4:15b says, "but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin."

Philippians 2 6-8 also says, "6Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God:
7 But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men:
8 And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross." But for everyone else, we have an inherited sin nature. God sent the Lord Jesus Christ to come to earth, die for our sins, he was then buried and he also raised him up for our justification. We have to believe that gospel in order to be saved. Those who choose not to believe the gospel are spiritually lost and dead in their trespasses and sins.

Verses 8-9 says, "8 But unto them that are contentious, and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness, indignation and wrath,
9 Tribulation and anguish, upon every soul of man that doeth evil, of the Jew first, and also of the Gentile;" This is literally everyone, including believers before we were saved.

Verse 10 says, "But glory, honour, and peace, to every man that worketh good, to the Jew first, and also to the Gentile:" Again, no person on earth, except for the Lord Jesus Christ, has ever been continously good.

11 For there is no respect of persons with God.

God will judge everyone according to the same standard.

Thank you Father God for showing us the truth in your word rightly divided, including the truth about judgment. Thank you also that through simple faith in Christ's death, burial and resurrection as atonement for our sins, we are saved and given eternal life! In Jesus's name, amen.
