Romans 2:1 | Romans Bible Study for Women

Father God, thank you for this time that we can spend reading and studying Romans chapter 2 about how God is the perfect judge, and mankind is accountable. Help us to keep an open mind and heart as we read, study and learn. In Jesus's name we pray, Amen.

Romans 1:32 and Romans 2:1

Romans 1:32 says, "Who knowing the judgment of God, that they which commit such things are worthy of death, not only do the same, but have pleasure in them that do them."

The last verse in Romans chapter one is a transitional verse, summarizing and preparing you for the next chapter. In Romans 1:32, the Apostle Paul is saying that man knows God's judgment is just, yet actually has pleasure in sin and even has pleasure in others who sin as well.

It's also important to note that man has knowledge of God within himself that God placed within all of us, and all of the creation itself also bears witness that God exists, but man hates God and wants to make himself into a God and so he ignores the fact that his sins are worthy of judgment and death, even though he knows that this is true! We hear from people all of the time, "you can't judge me!". If you are a believer (Christ and the entire Godhead are living in you if you are a believer; you are also hid with Christ in God) with sound grace doctrine built up in your inner man (Christ the word dwelling in you), you have every right to judge ("But he that is spiritual judgeth all things, yet he himself is judged of no man." 2 Cor 2:15) but when you do judge unsaved man and his crooked ways, you are now public enemy #1 to them! At the same time however, they go around judging others all of the time and they are actually judging you for judging them!

*A believer can judge spiritual matters but we do not of course judge a person to heaven or hell - only God will do that. We are not to be "fruit inspectors" either, but rather we can judge righteously if someone is speaking sound grace doctrine or not. We can make a judgment as to where we think a believer might be on their edification process, like if they have an understanding of basic doctrines or not. We can also use the doctrine in our inner man to make healthy grace-based decisions and judgments in life. We can also judge if something is sinful or not, or edifying or not, based upon on our understanding of scripture.

Romans 2:1

1 Therefore thou art inexcusable, O man, whosoever thou art that judgest: for wherein thou judgest another, thou condemnest thyself; for thou that judgest doest the same things.

The word "therefore" is a helping word that helps to give further explanation. It's important to notice these helping words when studying scripture.

Paul was saying that man knows God's judgment is just, but has pleasure in his own sins and in the sins of others. Man is having pleasure in other people's sins in order to try to justify his own sins. Man then begins to also judge others, because he's trying to make himself into his own God, and Paul is going to explain why man has NO RIGHT to judge others.

Religionists judge others all of the time (humanists, philosophers, etc are included). The religious Jewish people at that time were always judging others and they had even judged Jesus during His earthly ministry! The Lord said that they were like whited sepulchres full of dead men's bones!

Matthew 23:27 KJB

"Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye are like unto whited sepulchres, which indeed appear beautiful outward, but are within full of dead men's bones, and of all uncleanness."

The religious Jews, who did NOT keep God's law even though they claimed to, nor did they have any real faith at all, just put people under a heavy bondage. They loved to judge others when in reality they had no right to judge others!

Romans 2:1 KJB

"...for wherein thou judgest another, thou condemnest thyself; for thou that judgest doest the same things."

Thank you Father God for showing us the truth in your word rightly divided. Thank you also that through simple faith in Christ's death, burial and resurrection as atonement for our sins, we are saved and given eternal life! In Jesus's name, amen.

Homework:

Read Romans chapter 2 again. How often does Paul use the word "judge" in this chapter?
